Summary: Psychiatric Nurse in Outpatient Psychiatry at Barnes Jewish Hospital, Saint Louis, Missouri. Administered psychotropic intramuscular medications, completed nursing assessments, obtained labs, obtained vital signs, and supported 11 third-year psychiatric residents at Washington University.  Performed charge nurse duties: responsible for all daily operations of the clinic, including the development and implementation of safety protocols.

  • Developed an array of informational pamphlets on Hypertension to increase the health literacy of the clinic’s patients.
  • In April 2012, I received the “Great Catch Award” because I recognized that all the new AEDs in the new Center of Outpatient Health had no batteries.
  • Presented at BJC Nursing Grand Rounds: “Psychopharmacology: What Every Nurse Needs to Know.”

Staff Nurse III | April 2009 – August 2010

Summary:  Evening charge nurse at the Saint Louis Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center for a forensic psychiatric program called New Outlook that utilized the Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Model. Responsible for program implementation, medication management, and supervision of psychiatric aides. Other responsibilities included completing nursing assessments of psychiatric patients with comorbidities; writing daily, monthly and annual summaries; monitoring patients on precautions; and managing violent patient behaviors.

Telemetry Nurse | October 2008 – April 2009

Summary: Provided nursing services to cardiac patients with co-morbidity on a telemetry unit at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri. Completed new graduate internship related to providing nursing services for critically ill patients. Participated in the focus group on “Bedside Reporting”, which included research, focus group meetings, and participating in the pilot program. Currently, Bedside Reporting, is being used in SSM hospitals.

Summary:  This consultancy was engaged by the following clients, as described:

  • Lakeside Hospital – Employed on a Mobile Crisis Team for 6 hospitals, including ER, ICU and patient rooms.
  • Hopewell Center – Provided case management, and individual and family therapy for children, adolescents and adults; completed psycho-social assessments.
  • Omni Care – Provided foster care family training, and counseling for foster children.
  • Psychiatry Group – Provided individual and family therapy for patients of five psychiatrists.
  • Farmington Correctional Center – Provided psycho-education and counseling for adult male sexual offenders.

Supervisor 1998-2001

Summary: Supervised a clinical team of social workers, counselors, and case managers at Midtown Mental Health Center in Memphis, Tennessee.  Developed, evaluated, and measured training programs for clinical employees, including the development of the clinical team’s budget.  Designed and facilitated training programs for clinical staff (e.g., managing suicidal patients, dealing with hallucinations…).  Developed and implemented policies and procedures for the triage of new psychiatric patients, which included interviewing, hiring and training of new triage staff.  Served on several committees (e.g., credentialing, grievance, peer review, quality assurance…).  A monthly newsletter was voluntarily published to increase staff’s morale.

Community Activities

  • Coordinated a Community Project that focused on Childhood Obesity and Inactivity with Trailnet—a school walk/bike day. Provided classes on safety and healthy living for elementary school students.
  • Mental Health Fair 2000: Coordinated a mental health fair that increased community awareness about mental illness in the Greater Memphis area.
    • Secured 10 exhibitors who underwrote the cost of the Fair.
    • Received a Proclamation from Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton.
    • Offered four CEUs on Domestic Violence, Substance Abuse, Hate Crimes, and Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders.
    • Was interviewed on local Memphis radio stations.
    • Sponsored an essay and art contest in Memphis elementary schools on “How Mental Health Matters in My Community”.
    • Was interviewed on “Mental Health Minutes” on the library channel, Commercial Appeal, and WDIA Radio.
    • Provided screenings for substance abuse, ADHD, depression, anxiety and hypertension.
    • Developed a homepage, logo, promotional materials, administrative forms, programs and bookmarks.
